What must be done (paperwork) to do the swap? 1939 chief

Find someone who has completed the conversion and use their approval as approved data, if possible. Fill out a 337 for the engine change and make a logbook entry in the aircraft log. The engine log will also note the installation and indicated tach time when installed. This will require an IA to inspect and approve the work.

That's what I was afraid of. 2 different type certs, and lotsa hoops to jump through.

I would approach it as a Major Alteration to the Type Certificate and don't even bring up changing the Model type. You can use all of the 65CA parts to make the swap but it will always be a 65LA.
Fill out the 337 listing the parts needed for change and submit it. Don't try to increase gross weight or change performance/operation.

Great! Just want to get rid of the O-145, and put a Conti on it. Not try for any "extras".
So do the swap, submit 337, and W&B calc. (re-weigh the airplane) good to go?

First submit the 337 for the Major repair and when approved make the change.

Paul is correct: do the necessary paperwork first. If you can find approved paperwork it helps a lot. Having been through several 337 approvals I've also found that doing a good documentation on what you're proposing helps including the "Instructions for Continued Airworthiness". I've never had one denied if it makes sense to the feds. I might be able to put you in contact with someone who has approved paperwork if you need.
