48-State Adventure in a 7AC Champ. Interested?

Post by RRHaldeman »

I have a plan to circumnavigate the lower 48 States in the fall of 2020, leaving from Lebanon TN (M54), flying through and landing in each of the lower 48: around 7,000 NM give or take, at least 4 weeks, or maybe more if weather intervenes. My trip is pretty well planned out. Just wondering if anyone else with an Aeronca might be tempted to join me for part, or all, of the trip. I am blessed to have a Continental O-200 and two wing tanks for 24 gallons of fuel giving me a 3.7 hour range. My general flight plan is set forth below. (If you have Foreflight, just copy and paste to see the route graphically)

M54 KDZJ KLQK 3NR3 KPBX KBKW KXSA KESN 33N KMJX 40.604394/-74.043463 40.749523/-74.019587 40.961152/-73.905534 KDXR 20N NY94 KSFZ 6B6 3B4 KCON KDDH KSCH KITH KBFD 3G3 KIRS KEKM KJOT C77 KPVB KMCW KLYV KVTN KPHP KHEI KSHR KBIL KLVM KBZN 9S5 KBTM 38S KMSO 9S4 S83 KSFF KALW KTTD KSLE KEUG KMFR KRDD KPVF KMAE L45 KWJF KDAG KVGT KSGU KPGA KCEZ KBRG KDHT KPYX O53 KCFV KEOS KCRT 9M6 M11 KCEW KALX M5

I did a similar adventure in 2011, flying from Poplar Grove Apt in Illinois (C77) to San Diego, CA and then to Punta Gorda, FL so I know what I'm getting myself into. Why do I want to? Because I can . . . and it will make a great photo album for my grandkids. If you are tempted, post a reply.

Have a great flight and post lots of pictures. Did Melbourne, Florida to Rockland County New York back in the 60s. Today I am not sure my back could take it all.

Dick-

If I can get my Champ back together I'm in. It has an 18 gallon wing tank and the 13 gallon header tank feeding an O-235.

Have you thought about leaving the 20th National Aeronca Convention (mid June) and ending at Airventure (late July)? The Fall is alright tooand not quire as hot.

I wouldn't mind trying it in my Sierra. A little more comfort and I can slow it down to match the Champs.

Richard Montezuma,

I already have commitments in July that will block that June July timeframe. I plan to attend the Aeronca Reunion Jun 18-21 and rented a house in Chicago for 10 days in mid-July, after which I intend to head for AirVenture.

You are welcome to join. Perhaps plan on joining up as we fly through the Hudson River Corridor. A few friends of mind made the trip about 4 years ago in a motley assortment of aircraft: Aeronca Champ, Murphy Rebel and Legend Cub amphib. But they did it and loved it!

Through the Corridor with the Sedan would be great. Let me know what dates you plan on being in this area.
