Propeller Pitch

Post by MikeB » Sun Oct 09, 2011 17:38

All three of the A65 Champs on our field are running McCauley 74/43 props which I expect is a standard prop for the application. One of our members feels he needs a little more rpm/power for climb. Does anyone on this site have any experience twisting their prop to (say) 74/40? He'd most likely send it out to Maxwell in the Twin Cites to have the prop certified and work done.
Suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

Mike,
That's about the best prop for the A65 Aeroncas. I don't think much will be gained by re pitching. If the engine turns 2300 in flight or about 2150 on the ground that's all there is. Either the engine is sick or the plane weighs a ton. I've found the best way to improve performance is to push yourself away from the table.

Paul,
I tend to agree with you but just threw that out to see what the reactions would be to a flatter pitch. I haven't flown his plane but I think it static runs up to around 2150 and I think it's fairly 'light' according to the paperwork. Around 800# seems to stick in my mind. He's probably just expecting too much out of his little 65. Probably just talk anyway as talk is cheap.

Personally I think the only need for a "climb" prop would be operations out of high altitude airports or operations out of short fields (continuously operating out of a short field).

The best prop for a A-65 Champ is a standard pitch for all around performance. (Climb, Cruise pro's and con's are equal)
